Let's Get Ready for Spring!

Let the weed battle begin…
Right now, a battle is brewing just beneath the surface of your lawn. Weed seeds galore have been waiting patiently throughout winter and are now preparing to burst out of their virtual foxholes to pepper -- or inundate -- your lawn with unsightly weeds. The best way to combat this persistent annual enemy is with a pre-emergent weed control.

Pre-emergent weed control must be applied before the weeds have a chance to sprout! Wait too long and the crabgrass will prevail.

Remember: weeds germinate and grow during all seasons of the year. Because of this, many people fail in trying to control the weeds themselves since they will use a weed control product in the spring only and then wonder why they have weeds in the summer. Weed control products need to be used regularly just like the regular fertilizing schedule. Most people will use a "weed and feed" product that contains weed control products and fertilizer together. This is the easiest way to do both tasks. There are two types of weed control products: Pre-emergent and Post-emergent. Pre-emergent products control weeds before they germinate and come up. Post-emergent products kill existing weeds. Many homeowners become discouraged after attempting weed control because they use wrong type of weed killer for their particular assortment of culprit weeds. Good weed control is achieved only when the right product is used to attack the correct species of culprit weed, and even then, only if it is applied at the correct time and in the correct amount.

Clean up…
It’s time to clear out what the fall and winter left behind: leaves in planting beds, sticks, twigs, and branches. Prune back any perennials that were left in the fall.

Dig in…
Beds should receive a clean, neat edging, and the soil should be turned as well. It’s a great time to work in some compost.

Plant, Plant, Plant...
Before it gets to late, get your trees and shrubs planted so they have ample time to get their roots strong enough to tolerate the Summer heat.

Watering...
Automatic sprinkler systems should be on 'manual' right now. We are getting plenty of rain and there is no need to overwater.
